ABSTRACT

Chiwaukee prairie is a glacial lake sand prairie with some virgin prairie located on the west Lake Michigan coast in the southwestern corner of Lake County, Illinois. The boundaries are the Illinois Beach State Park and Spring Bluff Lake County Nature Preserve on the south, and patchwork north of 116th Street to 85th Street adjoining Kenosha Dunes on the north and Carol Beach Subdivision on the Lake Michigan Coast. Collections of Carex culms were photographed, scanned and micro- imaged for my next book of Dunesland Carex, a sequel to Woodland Carex, (2006) and Bog-Fen Carex, in process. Seventeen species were collected and sent to several University of Wisconsin herbaria. The Carex species list, including this research, was compared to the Illinois Beach State Park, and the Spring Bluff Nature Preserve inventories. Of the compiled 60 Carex species, Chiwaukee Prairie shared 27 species, and was the only one to have C. cryptolepis, C. flava, and C. prairea.
